Onions are a favorite traditional medicine for combating infectious diseases. Since ancient times, doctors have paid attention to its healing and preventive properties. But what will modern medicine say? Is there a scientific rationale for using it to combat coronavirus?

Onions have a number of beneficial properties: they stimulate digestion, thin the blood, normalize blood pressure, have an antioxidant effect, and even are an aphrodisiac. Along with garlic, it is used as an antimicrobial agent.

Does it help?

The plant contains the following beneficial substances:

  • Phytoncides - volatile compounds, found in large quantities in the essential oils of the bulbs. The plant needs them to destroy pathogenic bacteria, fungi and viruses. For the first time phytoncides were discovered by the Soviet scientist B.P. Tokin in the 1930s and proved their effectiveness against dysentery, tuberculosis, diphtheria bacillus, streptococci and staphylococci. Later, antiviral effect was also established. However, official medicine is in no hurry to use phytoncides, except in combination with other methods;
  • Vitamins of all groups are concentrated in the bow. Of particular importance for strengthening the body's defenses are FROM and D;
  • Zinc and selenium are recommended by doctors to strengthen the immune forces. The content of these elements in onions is off scale;
  • Cysteine derivatives provide sputum liquefaction - a symptomatic remedy.

Combining these ingredients, onions have become a popular remedy for airborne infections. These substances cannot kill the coronavirus. But eating onions makes people less likely to get sick and recover faster.

What is the use of onions

Contains many nutrients - the building blocks of immunity. That is why it is so beneficial to eat it. Together with onions, the following foods will help to strengthen health and defenses:

  • ginger, garlic, turmeric, parsley, dill;
  • citrus fruits, cranberries, kiwi, black currants, strawberries, rose hips, mountain ash, cranberries, lingonberries, sea buckthorn, apples, persimmons;
  • cabbage - sauerkraut, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli and seafood;
  • all colorful vegetables, especially pumpkin and bell peppers.

Spread the bulbs indoors. Phytoncides will weaken pathogenic bacteria, fungi and viruses in the environment - the load on the immune system will decrease. It is possible that the coronavirus will also choke, but such studies have not been carried out.

Phytoncides will disinfect and strengthen the upper respiratory tract during inhalation. Onion essential oils will relieve headaches and fatigue, normalize blood pressure, and have a beneficial effect on the nervous system.

WHO opinion

The World Health Organization's guidelines recognize the health benefits and antimicrobial properties of vegetables containing phytoncides. However, he does not advise them to fight the new coronavirus - their effectiveness has not been proven in any way.

IMPORTANT: the skepticism of doctors is justified, folk remedies, for all their benefits, cannot fully resist a viral infection.

Professor Netesov, head. Laboratory of Molecular Biology of RNA Viruses of the FGUN State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology "Vector", jokes about this: "garlic has a protective property - if you rub it, people will shy away from the smell and no one coughs at you." This can fairly be attributed to the bow.

No means have yet been found to destroy COVID-19 inside the body. The war is being waged with him outside. The most effective remedies are soap with warm water, alcohol, and antiseptics containing chlorine.

How does it work: soap eats away at the lipid membrane of the virus, and it loses its disease-causing properties. Alcohol and chlorine kill the virus on surfaces in a matter of minutes.

ATTENTION: Soap and skin antiseptics (Chlorhexidine) are suitable for the skin. For surface sterilization - alcohols (ethanol from 30%, ideally - 75%) and disinfectants with chlorine: Deo-chlorine, Javel-absolute, Nika-chlorine and others.

Myths and reality

Myth 1. Onions kill viral particles

Phytoncides can theoretically weaken SARS-CoV-2 particles that have not yet entered the body. Not scientifically proven, but not disproved either. And yet there is no point in hoping for such an outcome.

Myth 2. The more you eat, the better

It is fundamentally wrong! Onions are multifunctional. Eat a little more - it will irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa. Do not forget that the plant thins the blood and is a strong diuretic, and can also cause allergies.

Eat onions with care when:

  • pancreatitis, gastritis, peptic ulcer;
  • ischemic heart disease;
  • bronchial asthma and a tendency to allergies;
  • increased nervous excitability;
  • diabetes mellitus;
  • kidney disease.

Do not follow the example of a Chinese woman from The South China Morning Post who began to be treated with garlic and became addicted. After one and a half kilograms of food eaten, the woman ended up in the hospital with a sore throat.

Myth 3. "Onions adsorb viruses, put them indoors without removing the husks"

WeChat users have come across this advice. Onions cannot adsorb viruses, neither in husks nor cut. There is no scientific evidence for this.

Myth 4. Boiled onions are just as good as fresh ones.

If the onion is cooked or fried for a long time, then neither phytoncides nor vitamins will remain in it.

Myth 5. Vodka and onions

"A myth on the verge of criminal thought," according to the chief narcologist of the Russian Ministry of Health Yevgeny Brun. Alcohol causes additional stress on the heart and has no effect on the virus that has already entered the body. For the same reason, you cannot go to the bathhouse: load on blood vessels and temperature drop reduce immunity.

Therapist Irina Yartseva in an interview dispelled the myth about vodka - an external antiseptic. Alcohol and vodka dry out the skin and disrupt its natural protective microflora. You can only use it to treat the edges of the wound.

Recipes for prevention

The drugs will help strengthen the immune system and remove vitamin deficiency.

Recipe 1

A medium-sized onion should be chopped in a blender or grated on a fine grater.

  1. Boil 0.5 liters of milk, pour the onion gruel, do not boil.
  2. Insist in a closed container for 20 minutes.
  3. Drink at night or divided into two doses - morning and evening. Be sure to drink it hot.

REFERENCE: it is better to take a purple onion. It contains more vitamin C and less bitterness than other varieties.

Recipe 2

Make gruel as in the previous recipe.

  1. Squeeze the resulting gruel with gauze.
  2. Add 100 g of high-quality natural honey to the onion juice and mix.
  3. Take a tablespoon after dinner, hot.

The resulting infusion is stored longer than in the first case.

Nasal drops

Here's a simple recipe:

  1. Grate the onion finely and drain the juice.
  2. Heat vegetable oil and mix with juice.
  3. Leave to stand overnight.
  4. In the morning, pour the oily liquid into a bottle with a pipette.

Instill one or two drops in each nostril in the morning and evening.

Onion inhalation delivers phytoncides to the upper respiratory tract. This inhibits respiratory pathogens. Doctors do not recommend putting onions in a gauze mask, the method makes breathing difficult. A person takes a deep breath, which increases the chance of attracting viral particles.

Nutritionist Lyudmila Denisenko recommends sniffing sliced onion slices several times a day.

ATTENTION: observe the measure! Onions irritate the mucous membranes and thus can weaken the protective barrier and cause inflammation.

An interesting method was proposed by the Russian inventor I.I. Smyslov. A perforated box with onion filling is attached to the nasal septum. When pressed on the container, the onion releases phytoncides. Onions are placed a little - the inhaler should not interfere with breathing.

Until mainstream medicine finds a vaccine, it is useful to learn more about traditional prevention methods. People say about the onion that it is "from seven ailments." Maybe COVID-19 from this seven? The listed methods are recommended for use together with basic hygiene rules and healthy optimism.
